Traditional water heaters:
For household use, most water heaters in the United States are of the tank type. Household tank water
heaters, also called storage water heaters, can range in size from 20 to 100 gallons (75 to 400 liters).
Water heaters may use electricity, natural gas, propane, heating oil, solar, or other energy sources.
Residential combustion water heaters manufactured since 2003 in the United States have been redesigned
to resist ignition of flammable vapors and incorporate a thermal cutoff switch, per ANSI Z21.10.1.
Compared to tankless water heaters, storage water heaters have the advantage of using energy at a
relatively slow rate, storing the heat for later use. The disadvantage is that, after a while, the water inside
the tank will cool down causing the heating system to turn on to activate the heating process again. Also,
once the heated water supply has been diminished, it takes significant time before hot water is available
again.
Traditional tank water heaters can use several different energy sources, but typically electric and gas will
be the main staples. An electric water heater is basically a piece of wire that has a high resistance and
must be kept from coming in direct contact with water. A gas heater works by a gas valve allowing a certain
amount of gas to fuel a flame, and the amount of gas will determine how hot the flame will be.
Electric water heaters have two heating elements,: a lower and an upper element. These metal heating
elements are made of metal and get hot from electrical resistance, similar to what you would find in an
electric cooking range. As these elements heat up, the water between them heats up as well.
The gas water heater works by a law of physics called convection which, loosely paraphrased, states that
heat rises. Convection is a simple rule that you live with every day, and a hot water tank is no exception.
Cold water is supplied to the tank and injected at the bottom of the tank through a dip tube The denser
cold water stays there and is heated by the gas burner. As the water heats up, it naturally rises and is
drawn off by the hot water discharge pipe.
